Donald Hopkins, Jr., PE (Don) has Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in fire protection engineering and is a registered fire protection engineer in multiple states (CA, DC, LA, MA, MD, NJ, NY, PA, TX and WY). Don has over 30 years' experience in fire protection engineering, is a fellow in the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and was a long time member on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) technical committees on Sprinkler System Discharge Criteria (NFPA 13 SSD), Records Storage (NFPA 232), Inspection, Testing and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems (NFPA 25), Protection of Cultural Resources (NFPA 909) and Protection of Historic Statues (NFPA 914).
Don has technical experience in fire protection and fire alarm system design, code-consulting, forensics/litigation support, corrosion evaluations, research/fire testing, performance-based design, fire/smoke modeling and timed-egress analyses. He has performed fire and loss investigations for cases involving fires, fire protection system inadvertent discharges, fire protection system and fire alarm system malfunctions, improper building and fire protection system design, and improper building construction.
Don has performed performance-based alternative design work to demonstrate code equivalency. Analyses entailed fuel loading and hazard assessments, timed-egress studies computational fire modeling, and bench- or full-scale fire testing to evaluate specific fire hazards. Assessments included evaluating the effectiveness of existing or proposed fire protection systems, increasing maximum allowable travel distances, effects of window breakage on emergency egress, omission of passive fire protection on structural steel, and the need for sprinklers beneath raised metal floors. Projects included historic buildings, cleanrooms, libraries, wineries, theaters, museums, high-rise buildings, and unique/complex building designs.
Don assisted in the development and teaching of courses for the Federal Aviation Administration Airport Traffic Control Tower Fire System Maintenence program. He performed hands on fire alarm training and troubleshooting for various brands of fire alarm control units, equipment, and wiring. He has attended Notifier factory training and was certified ONYX series fire alarm system equipment and programming. He also attended Simplex factory training and was certified on 4100U series fire alarm system equipment and programming.
Don retired from Jensen Hughes in 2024 after a ~25 year career where was a Vice President and the Global Fire Suppression Service Line Leader.
